Ibadan Stampede: 35 Dead as Police Arrest Ooni’s Ex-Wife, Others

The death toll from the tragic stampede at a children’s funfair held at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, has risen to 35, with six others critically injured, according to the Oyo State Police Command.

Police spokesperson Adewale Osifeso, in a statement on Thursday, revealed that the event’s organisers, including Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, and her media partner, Agidigbo FM, have been arrested alongside the school principal and five others.

The funfair, organised by Wings Foundation in partnership with Agidigbo FM, reportedly lacked proper authorization and adequate safety measures, leading to the tragic incident.

The police have launched a thorough investigation and vowed to hold those responsible accountable. The Oyo State Police Command extended condolences to the victims’ families and assured the public of measures to prevent future occurrences.
